Why I am NOT Here for Fox’s New Empire..
for now.
It has been a very long time since I posted, I apologize, I am still a student so cut me some slack. What I want to discuss is Fox’s new show Empire starring Terrance Howard and Taraji P. Henson premiering January 7th, 2015. Before I explain why I am not watching let me note that I am pro almost every show starring Black faces that isn’t produced by Tyler Perry. Recently we have been blessed with some great shows produced by and/or starring black people; Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Gotham, Blackish and etc. We are finally getting to see some quality and complex characters and storylines. I am all for the new wave of diversity in our weeknight television (including the Latino wave!!). Since seeing the publicity of Fox’s new show recently I have not been sold on tuning in, here are a few reasons why:
- The trailer looks like a bad episode of the game. Full of flashy clothing, over the top dramatics and Tasha Mac, or should I say Cookie (played by Taraji)
- Is the continued storyline from Hustle and Flow? Djay (played by Terrence) gets out of prison and hooks up with Shug (played by Taraji) to build a Hip Hop Empire. Not knocking Hustle and Flow but do we need a TV version?
- Why does the Yvette side of Taraji have to return? Love my fellow DC area native but this is a role I hate her in. I am afraid it will just box her in, I want to see her outside of black films and she has the talent and credentials!
- I read the show synopsis..rolled eyes
- It is on the same night and time of Blackish..
- I have a feeling Mona Scott Young has her hands in this production somehow lol
- The characters sound complex in the synopsis BUT I can’t get past the horrible trailer to see that.
Like I stated before I am all for support so I will give the show a try via Hulu plus the next day (shout out to Hulu, go ahead and endorse us) but if I am not impressed by the first three episodes I will leave it alone.
