King Kong. King of Beasts. A force to be reckoned with.
It's always difficult when you hear that someone new will be trying to revive something you remember for the past. I know that a lot of people get angry, they feel as if they're having their childhood taken away from them. The nostalgia is lost.
I, for one, am always at least a little intrigued when I hear that they're trying to re-invent something that I loved. I enjoyed the new Godzilla, I'm excited for Power Rangers - I know I'll go see these movies no matter how bad they may look. And Kong: Skull Island looked absurd enough to be something I would enjoy.
The first thing I noticed about this film is that it went a completely polar opposite direction than its predecessor. It didn't take itself too seriously, the pacing was much quicker, and it had more than just Kong. Instead of meeting our big bad gorilla friend halfway through the movie, we actually meet him so early on that he begins to feel like a major character instead of a villain.
The cast does a really great job, particularly Samuel L. Jackson. He really blurs the line between hero and villain, and the movie itself explores (in it's own way) how good vs bad is all a matter of perspective. We also get a solid performance out of John Goodman, who I for one am glad is back in the game. Tom Hiddleston round out the cavalry as a tracker, and our lead through this treacherous journey into Skull Island.
The movie becomes a great bit more humorous when the crew manages to find John C. Reilly. He doesn't take himself too seriously, and he brings a delightful charm to the movie the felt like it was missing in the first half. He interesting take on things from being stuck on the island for a few years were definitely welcome.
All in all, this was a very fun movie for me to watch. It didn't take itself too seriously, but had enough deep content to keep me interested. The characters were a little 2 dimensional, but I felt like Kong, as a character, was much more fleshed out than before. If you're in the mood for a fun and action filled reboot of a movie about a giant gorilla, look no further!
Additionally, there is an after credits scene (that I was extremely stoked for!) so make sure you stay for that!
